landon donovan bianca kajlich divorceU.S. national team star Landon Donovan has filed for divorce from his wife, actress Bianca Kajlich, according to TMZ.

The pair married in 2006 and have been separated since 2009, but Donovan -- citing irreconcilable differences -- officially filed the paperwork on Tuesday.

In a slightly surprising twist -- especially when it comes to divorces involving pro athletes -- Donovan is seeking spousal support and legal fees from Kajlich. While Donovan makes $2.1 million per year with the Los Angeles Galaxy, Kajlich is an actress on the successful CBS sitcom, Rules of Engagement.

The inaugural MLS Re-Entry Draft kicked off to lofty expectations last week with a first round that was more a preamble than anything else, as just two unheralded players found new homes.

But when Wednesday's second stage began, the player movement mechanism most certainly found its legs.

During the rapid-fire draft's nine-minute second stage, 11 players, including high-profile veterans Juan Pablo Angel, Jeff Cunningham and Jimmy Conrad, saw their rights shipped to new clubs in the innovative event that emerged thanks to last offseason's collective bargaining agreement.

While teams selecting in the first stage were bound to certain contractual obligations, the second go-around provided more freedom to negotiate down the salaries of expensive veterans, thus opening the personnel floodgates.

The most attention-grabbing move came courtesy of Bruce Arena and the Los Angeles Galaxy, who acquired the Houston Dynamo's fifth overall pick and selected Angel, formerly of the New York Red Bulls. A lethal striker with an impressive pedigree and infallible MLS track record, Angel was widely expected to be claimed by a goal-starved squad looking to add a proven commodity up front.

Instead, the Supporters Shield winners claimed him in hopes of reinforcing an already prolific attack. At 35-years-old, however, Angel no longer warrants the designated player money he made in New York. So the clock is now ticking on Arena to convince Angel he should decline opportunities abroad and take his talents to Long Beach for less money.

A slew of Americans logged minutes for their respective European clubs this weekend, but the most notable outing came courtesy of a player who never got off the bench.

One year, two months, nine days and one grueling comeback after last dressing for a top-flight match, Charlie Davies returned to the game day roster in France as an unused substitute during Sochaux's lively 1-1 draw with Bordeaux on Sunday.

Davies last played a significant match Oct. 10, 2009, when he started the United States' 3-2 World Cup qualifying win over Honduras that booked the Yanks' ticket to South Africa.

Three days later, he was involved in a fatal car accident near Washington D.C., that left him with three broken bones in his right leg, a torn knee ligament, a fractured elbow, eye socket and nose and a lacerated bladder.

Sochaux returns to action Wednesday at Monaco for its final game before the holiday break. With Nigerian Brown Ideye and Malian Modibo Maiga ahead of him on the Sochaux depth chart, Davies could very well be loaned out during the January transfer window as he continues to climb back to full fitness. Davies previously played with the Sochaux reserves in the French fourth division during his rehabilitation.

Josh WolffWith both rounds of the 2010 MLS Re-Entry Draft now complete, Fanhouse takes a look at some of the process' winners and losers.

Winners

DC United
Picks: Joseph Ngwenya in stage 1, Josh Wolff in stage 2

After the year United had, the only place to go is up. D.C. was one of only two teams to take advantage of round 1 of the Re-Entry Draft, scooping up Joseph Ngwenya from Houston. The Zimbabwean's statistics may not be that impressive, but he hasn't really been given the chance to spread his wings yet. He has spent time in Austria and Turkey, and has won the MLS Cup with both Houston and LA. His leadership and experience should give United some badly needed punch up top.

Wolff, too, will help D.C. recover some of the backbone they so sorely lacked in 2010. The forward has been a part of two separate Gold Cup-winning U.S. national teams, and has already grabbed both the MLS Cup and the Open Cup during his tenure in the league. He's getting on in years, but he proved last season that he can still be a calming presence in the midfield.

One of the preeminent figures of Major League Soccer goalkeeping called it a career on Tuesday, as longtime San Jose Earthquakes and Houston Dynamo stalwart Pat Onstad announced his retirement after seven seasons in the league.

Onstad, who will turn 43 next month, will join the D.C. United coaching staff as the goalkeepers coach. The Dynamo did not pick up the option on Onstad?s contract following the 2010 season, and no MLS team took a shot on the three-time MLS Cup winner in the ensuing Re-Entry Draft.

stuart holden premier league guardianU.S. national team midfielder Stuart Holden is the best player in the English Premier League.

All right, maybe that statement is just a tad premature. But based on The Guardian's analysis of readers' player ratings, Holden has been the highest-rated performer throughout the first half of the Premier League campaign, with an average mark of 7.4 out of 10.

Yes, English fans have rated an American as the best player in the world's most popular league.

The 25-year-old has started each of his 16 league appearances for Bolton this season, going the full 90 in all but one contest as Wanderers have made a surprising run to seventh place (6-4-8).

landon donovanFatigued following a very busy year that included the World Cup, a long season with the Los Angeles Galaxy and his successful loan to Everton, Landon Donovan announced Tuesday afternoon that he won't be heading over to Europe during the current MLS offseason and that he'll focus on resting and preparing for the 2011 campaign.

Recent reports had linked the U.S. national team star to Newcastle United, Fulham and, of course, the Toffees (plus Manchester City over the summer).

"While I enjoyed my time at Everton last season and still appreciate all the support their fans have given me, I feel that it is important to continue to rest and recover this offseason as opposed to going on loan," Donovan said.

"I never considered being loaned to a club other than Everton, but I have been playing nearly non-stop for the past two years and I believe that this decision will allow me to perform at my best for the Galaxy and the national team throughout the upcoming year."

Donovan, 28, signed a new four-year contract with L.A. last December that pays him $2.1 million per year.

This year he played 10 games at Everton, eight with the national team and at least 29 with the Galaxy (not counting U.S. Open Cup and exhibitions). He spent January 2009 at Bayern Munich.

He was named U.S. Soccer athlete of the year on Monday.

"We think in the best interest of the club and the player that Landon continues his postseason break and begins preparations for what will be a challenging year in 2011 at both the domestic and international levels," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.

L.A. qualified for the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League, scheduled to take place next fall, by virtue of winning the MLS Supporters Shield last season.

The Galaxy are committed to keeping David Beckham around for the entire MLS season as well.

Following the English midfielder's comments over the weekend that he was interested in a stint in Europe that might keep him on Fabio Capello's national team radar, L.A. issued this statement to the Associated Press:

"We are not aware that David is looking to be loaned to any other team and we are fully expecting he reports with the rest of his Galaxy teammates in late January for the upcoming season."

ronaldinhoThe long-running rumors connecting Ronaldinho with the Los Angeles Galaxy apparently are a signature or two away from finally being silenced.

The Brazilian icon and 2010 World Cup snub reportedly has agreed to terms with Grêmio, the club from his home town of Porto Alegre with which he began his career a dozen years ago.

Grêmio president Paulo Odone told RBS television on Wednesday that the contract terms are "all settled" and that all that remains is for the player to secure his release from AC Milan.

"Ronaldinho wants to go back to Grêmio, which is his home -- where he began playing football," Odone said.

The RBS interview is scheduled to air on Thursday, according to the club's Web site.

Ronaldinho joined Milan in the summer of 2008 after five years with Barcelona, which sold the player to the Italian giant for just under $30 million. His form and health have been inconsistent since. While he appeared revitalized during much of the 2009-10 season, he now has not started a Serie A match for the league leaders in more than two months.

Twenty Major League Soccer players and four based in Europe, almost all of whom are relatively new to the U.S. national team, will comprise the roster for the traditional January training camp at the Home Depot Center outside Los Angeles, which will culminate with a Jan. 22 friendly against Chile.

Among the invitees are 17-year-old New York Red Bulls striker Juan Agudelo, who scored the dramatic winner in last month's game against South Africa, and Norway-based midfielder Mikkel Diskerud, 20, who had the assist.

Bradley also rewarded the players who helped their teams to the MLS Cup Final. There are four members of the Colorado Rapids and four from FC Dallas in the squad, plus midfielder Dax McCarty, who was outstanding for the latter in Toronto before his recent move to D.C. United.

The camp usually comprises fringe players whose clubs are in their offseason, meaning only those in MLS and with Scandinavian teams typically take part.

The 24 players have played a combined 28 times for the senior U.S. national team. Midfielder Alejandro Bedoya has six of them.

"The timing is right to assess many of the younger players and to broaden the player pool as we look forward to the next three years," Bradley said.

"These extended camps give the coaching staff an opportunity to work with these players closely, and at the same time expose them to what the environment and expectations are like at the international level. We have a good feel for the veteran players in the pool, several of whom are coming off long seasons, and we certainly expect many of them to be part of the program for the important tournaments this year."

Real Salt Lake goalie Nick Rimando, 31, is the oldest player invited.

Convey said in this November interview with Pitch Pass that he did not expect to be called up to the national team while Bradley was in charge.

Here is the full roster:

GOALKEEPERS: Dominic Cervi (Glasgow Celtic), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire), Matt Pickens (Colorado Rapids), Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake).

DEFENDERS: A.J. DeLaGarza (Los Angeles Galaxy), Sean Franklin (Los Angeles Galaxy), Omar Gonzalez (Los Angeles Galaxy), Ugo Ihemelu (FC Dallas), Zach Loyd (FC Dallas), Ryan Miller (Halmstads), Tim Ream (New York Red Bulls), Anthony Wallace (Colorado Rapids), Marvell Wynne (Colorado Rapids).

MIDFIELDERS: Eric Alexander (FC Dallas), Alejandro Bedoya (Örebro), Sam Cronin (San Jose Earthquakes), Mikkel Diskerud (Stabæk), Jeff Larentowicz (Colorado Rapids), Dax McCarty (D.C. United), Brek Shea (FC Dallas).

FORWARDS: Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls), Justin Braun (Chivas USA), Teal Bunbury (Sporting Kansas City), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes).

USA EgyptThe U.S. men's national team will begin preparing for the 2011 Gold Cup in earnest Feb. 9, when it will travel to Cairo for a friendly against Egypt, the three-time defending African Cup of Nations champion.

The match is set on a FIFA international fixture date, thus allowing coach Bob Bradley to choose from his full pool of players. He will be looking to test personnel and formations ahead of next summer's Gold Cup, at which a place in the 2013 Confederations Cup will be at stake.

The United States is also scheduled to play Jan. 22 (a non-FIFA date) against Chile at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., and working to schedule a March friendly at home against Argentina.

Despite failing to qualify for the 2010 World Cup after losing a playoff against Algeria, Egypt is currently ranked No. 10 in the world by FIFA.

Bob Bradley called a young, inexperienced group of 24 players to participate in the three-week January camp that concludes on with a friendly against Chile on Jan. 22. The group averages just a shade over 23-years-old, and half are seeking their first caps. So just who are these guys?

GOALKEEPERS

Dominic Cervi (Glasgow Celtic) - The towering netminder is trapped behind Lukasz Zaluska and Fraser Forster at Celtic and is now on loan at Dundee. Will a half against Chile help him catch the eye of another club?
